Volunteer Opportunities

COMPASS recruits volunteers throughout Tuscarawas and Carroll Counties to assist with many duties that help the agency function. Volunteers are needed in the following areas:

  • Crisis Hotline: Volunteers are needed to staff our 24-hour Crisis Hotline which provides immediate support and information to sexual assault victims. Volunteers are required to undergo intensive training and be approved by a mental health professional. Approved volunteers will receive a large volunteer reference manual. As a crisis line volunteer, you can answer calls right in the comfort of your own home.
  • Hospital Advocates: Our area hospitals contact COMPASS when they are treating a sexual assault victim in their emergency rooms. Volunteer advocates are needed to provide support and information to the survivor at the hospital. Hospital advocates carry a beeper provided by the agency for one week and can be called out during any non-business hours.

  • Educational Speakers: Volunteer speakers are needed to talk to various individuals, clubs, and organizations in the area. Speakers are needed to present topics related to COMPASS and its services. All volunteers in this area will receive a speaker's notebook, outline, and speech materials. Speakers might also address topics such as Date Rape, Rape, Sexual Assault, Sexual Harassment, and other related topics.

  • Office Assistance: Volunteers are needed during the business day to help answer the office telephone line, type documents, make copies, and assist with document preparation and other general office duties.

  • Material Distribution: Volunteers are needed to distribute COMPASS brochures and newsletters to various organizations throughout the area. Volunteers will be reimbursed for mileage expenses incurred while using their personal vehicles for material distribution. Proof of auto insurance is required.

  • Community Awareness: Volunteers are needed to help COMPASS with its various community awareness activities. Such activities might include the following: staffing of COMPASS booth at the County fair and other information fairs held throughout the year, assisting with COMPASS fundraisers, assisting with candlelight vigils, and working at other events which help increase the community's awareness of COMPASS.

  • Serve on a COMPASS Planning Committee: Volunteers are needed to help serve on one or more of the following planning committees: Community Awareness, Direct Victim Assistance, Fundraising, Research, and Speaker's Bureau.

  • Board Membership: From time to time when a vacancy occurs, volunteers are needed to fill seats on the COMPASS Board of Trustees. Interested volunteers must complete an application and provide a resume' to the Board for their review. Upon Board approval, an individual will be invited to accept a seat on the Board. The COMPASS Board of Trustees is led by 10 area residents who govern the organization.

Those who are interested in becoming a COMPASS volunteer will receive training which involves a variety of learning tools from guest speakers to videos. At the end of training, each trainee will be asked to make a personal commitment to provide dedicated, quality, confidential services when acting as a COMPASS volunteer.

If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a COMPASS volunteer, please e-mail or call our Volunteer Coordinator at (330) 339-2504 or call our Carrollton office at (330) 627-6675. Thank you for your interest. COMPASS volunteers heal the heart of hurting.
