WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE RAPED
- First of all, realize that YOU ARE NOT ALONE, and it is not your
fault--you did not do anything to provoke this attack against you. Rape is a
crime--it is not about sex, but about power and control.
- Contact the police department, hospital, or COMPASS immediately. COMPASS
is prepared to help you, wherever you are in Tuscarawas or Carroll County.
- Do not bathe, wash your hands, douche, or otherwise destroy evidence.
Also, please do not change clothes until the police officer advises you to do
so. Take a change of clothes with you to the hospital because the clothing you
are wearing will be needed for evidence.
- Make sure you get medical attention for collection of evidence, to assess any
injuries and to obtain treatment for any sexually transmitted diseases you may have
contracted. A pregnancy test can also be completed at that time. COMPASS
can provide advocates for support and information to Tuscarawas and Carroll County area survivors while at
the hospital.
- During questioning, remain calm. Many times questions which must be asked
will be difficult for you to answer. Do not lie or make up answers to fill in
what you cannot remember. It is not unusual for violence induced trauma to cause
temporary memory loss. There also may be memory loss if you were the victim
of a drug induced rape or sexual assault.
- Call COMPASS with any questions or concerns you may have--now or later. We are trained to
assist survivors of rape and sexual assault and are here to help you through this difficult time.
